Education Exchange Corps

The Education Exchange Corps is a non-profit organization that places college students in summer elementary school classrooms as teaching assistants, and in administrative internships at school district headquarters. As teaching assistants, college students work directly in the classroom and help students with a variety of subjects, with a special focus on math and reading skills. In the past, students have played a large role in teaching science courses and building specialized teaching programs for children in need of the extra help. Administrative interns work at district headquarters and provide essential support in various departments. Past students have helped revise science curriculum, written press releases, and conducted quantitative analyses for summer school assessment. The Education Exchange Corps is currently offering placements to Duke students for summer 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri. In the past two years, they have placed over 100 college students, including 12 Duke students, to help more than 1000 children in St. Louis. All majors are welcome. The program lasts 7-10 weeks in June-July. While the program does not offer paid positions, Duke students can apply for a stipend from the Career Center if they apply before March 1. The Education Exchange Corps helps students find housing. For those who need a job in order to intern, they offer a part-time track that includes all of the support offered to full-time interns.
