Graduate Opportunities
Research Group Affiliation
During the first fall semester, new students are introduced to research in progress within the Department by a series of presentations by the faculty in the seminar course CHM 377. Later in semester, students will discuss possible research projects with individual faculty members whose work is of particular interest. While many students enter graduate school with their area of interest already selected, it is not essential that this be done, and the process outlined above is helpful in arriving at a decision. Affiliation with a research director is accomplished on the basis of the student's and faculty member's mutual interests, with the approval of the Department Chair. The research group affiliations are normally completed by the beginning of the second semester, and the student can then actively begin the research that will ultimately lead to the submission of the Ph.D. dissertation.
