Electric Dipole Moments of Biomolecules in the Gas Phase
Abstract:
Recent advances in laser, molecular beam, and computer technology have made possible measurements of the permanent and induced dipole moments of several large molecules in the gas phase. This talk will describe applications of this technique to several benchmark systems including organic molecules excited to electronically excited charge-transfer states, hydrogen bonded complexes of molecules like indole with water, and the different conformations of small biomolecules such as tryptamine. New methods now under development to extend these measurements to much larger systems will be discussed.
