Dynamics are Paramount to Thermodynamics: In Material Properties of Supramolecular Networks
- Abstract:
- Polymeric networks crosslinked through kinetically liable metal-ligand interactions are reported. The dynamic mechanical properties (through rheological measurements) are directly correlated to the molecular dissociation dynamics. The dynamics of supramolecular polymers has received little attention in the field, despite being of great import in the potential advantages of these materials. Our system is able to keep the structure of the networks constant while varying the dynamics of the system. The faster the dissociation dynamics of the crosslinks, the lower the viscosity measured. Other rheological properties are investigated and attributed to the dynamics of the system including the behavior of the dynamic moduli. This work is potentially useful in understanding the fundamental mechanism of repairable solid-state polymers through utilization of supramolecular networks.
