Synthesis, Modification, and Characterization of UV Emitting Upconvertion Nanocrystals
- Abstract:
Near-IR to UV upconverting nanocrystals (UCNCs) have been designed towards attaining a dominant UV emission through a multiphoton energy transfer upconversion process while simultaneously muting visible emitting states. Tm – Yb, Er – Yb, and Tb – Yb lanthanide ion pairs have been chosen for optimization within NaYF4, Na-doped YbF3, and NaYbF4 host lattices with specific surfactant compositions employed to control crystal phase, NC size, and monodispersity. Initial results towards the optimization of Y2O3 as a low-energy phonon protective shell and readily functionalizable material are also presented.
