Energy Resources, What is the Problem and How Can Basic Research Help?
Abstract:

Informal talk for all curious students and postdocs

What do we (most of the scientific community) mean when we say that there is a problem of supply of sustainable energy resources to provide the world's power needs and how can basic science help us tackle and solve it?

Starting with a general overview of what we perceive as “the problem”, I will note approaches to tackle the issues that lead to the perception and realities and illustrate how basic research is central to our present and future efforts.

A major goal is to allow us, by way of intelligent discussions, to be able to discern sense from non-sense, especially in the press, hype from serious stuff and appreciate the variety of views that exist and the multiple ways in which mankind make the energy issue a non-issue, with special emphasis on where basic research can contribute.
