Abstract:
Melanocortin receptors are members of the G-protein
coupled receptor class, which display seven transmembrane regions as a
hallmark. To date, five melanocortin receptors have been identified,
each having a unique tissue expression pattern. Sequence variation
within these proteins has been linked to diverse physiological roles such
as regulating human pigmentation and genetic obesity. As there are
only two endogenous antagonists for the class of G-protein coupled receptors,
considerable effort has been put forth to identify novel antagonists to
aid in elucidating their biological functions. Pharmaceutical interests
in melanocortin receptors as potential drug targets have increased as more
is discovered about them.
