Abstract

Supramolecular chemistry is a relatively new area of chemistry that has seen rapid growth over the last decade.  A goal of supramolecular chemistry is to better understand the ability to manipulate structures in order to develop systems with new properties.  Columnar phases are a type of supramolecular assemblies that have raised much interest.  Their unique properties such as the ability to form liquid crystalline phases have led to many proposed structures. Recently new structures have been developed in hopes of learning more about the organization and properties of these interesting compounds as well as a possibility of harnessing their properties for developments in materials science.  This seminar will include background information about columnar phases, potential uses and some specific examples of columnar phases.
